Washington County, Kentucky with a population of just under 12,000, was organized in 1792 and was formed from Nelson County land. The county seat, Springfield, is home to the oldest county courthouse still in use in Kentucky. Washington County was named for George Washington and was the first county created after Kentucky separated from Virginia.
